Angels triumph, lift Foxies to No.1 seed in PVL Reinforced Conference

Petro Gazz, despite an up-and-down campaign in a tournament it has twice ruled, came up big when it mattered most, stunning a heavily favored PLDT side, 25-21, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, to clinch the No. 5 spot in the PVL Reinforced Conference at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay on Thursday night.

True to the tournament’s promise of parity, the final rankings remained unsettled until the very last match of the prelims. And the Angels’ victory over a powerhouse High Speed Hitters squad – one eyeing a third straight crown – shocked many not just for the result, but for the control and confidence Petro Gazz showed throughout their highly-anticipated duel.

The Angels’ triumph also reshuffled the top of the standings. Farm Fresh, which earlier swept Chery Tiggo to finish at 7-1, secured the coveted No. 1 seed. ZUS Coffee likewise ended at 7-1 but settled for the No. 2 spot via tiebreak, while PLDT slipped to No. 3 at 6-2. Creamline had earlier secured No. 4, followed by Petro Gazz, Cignal, Capital1 and Akari completing the Top 8.

With the quarterfinal field set, the stage is now primed for the most riveting stretch of the year-ending tournament organized by Sports Vision. Starting Monday at the Araneta Coliseum, all eight teams embark on a simple but brutal mission – win or go home. The four winners will move on to Thursday’s semifinals, leading to Sunday’s championship showdown – also at the Big Dome.

Farm Fresh will thus face Akari, ZUS Coffee will take on Capital1, PLDT will clash with sister team Cignal, and Creamline will once again rekindle its storied rivalry with Petro Gazz.

Although the seedings offer a snapshot of consistency, many believe the rankings carry little weight once the knockout pressure sets in. The conference has already been a battleground of reversals, collapses and unexpected triumphs – proof of how tightly matched the field is and how volatile the results can be.

The presence of perhaps the deepest, most explosive cast of reinforcements ever assembled in a PVL Reinforced Conference has only heightened the unpredictability. Imports have frequently tipped the balance, delivering momentum-shifting surges that erased leads in minutes or turned sure victories into stinging defeats.

But more than firepower, what will define the quarterfinals are the intangibles – resilience, poise in the toughest moments and a genuine no-tomorrow mindset. With pressure magnified and scouting thorough, teams must draw on experience, hunger and composure to distinguish themselves from the pack.

Over the past weeks, even the lowest-seeded squads have shown they can challenge the giants, creating a playoff picture where upsets are not just possible – they are expected.

Petro Gazz itself demonstrated that readiness. After navigating a wobbly start to the season, the Angels rediscovered their sharpness and stunned PLDT behind timely adjustments, clutch plays and unwavering resolve.

They erased deficits in the first two sets, then rebounded from a third set slip with a commanding performance in the fourth set, displaying their championship mettle that suggests they are more than capable of chasing a third Reinforced crown.

Libero Bangs Pineda sparkled on defense with 23 excellent digs and 10 receptions to earn Best Player of the Game honors, though she was quick to deflect praise.

“Nag-cover lang ako sa mga nawawala. ’Yun ang malaking tulong ko sa kanila,” said the former Adamson standout, now reunited with her former team.

Lindsey Vander Weide posted a career-high 35 points, while Brooke Van Sickle backed her up with a solid 27-point performance and Jonah Sabete and MJ Phillips added 12 and 10 markers, respectively, as the Angels outgunned the High Speed Hitters in attacks, 76-59.

Savi Davison set the pace for PLDT with 27 points while Nastya Bavykina scored 21 markers, Kim Dy added eight points and Mika Reyes and Majoy Baron matched seven-point outputs.

Petro Gazz mounted a spirited comeback from 16-22 down in the third set, pulling to within, 23-24, but the High Speed Hitters kept their composure as Davison delivered a calm off-the-block hit that extended the match and momentarily stalled the Angels’ surge.

But the reprieve was short-lived. Petro Gazz stormed to a 12-8 advantage in Set 4 and never looked back. With Jonah Sabee providing steady support to Lindsey Vander Weidi at the net, the Angels cruised to match point at 24-17.

PLDT, however, refused to fold. The High Speed Hitters saved four straight match points, anchored by Kath Arado’s spectacular floor defense – including a sequence where they foiled four consecutive attempts from Vander Weide, leaving Petro Gazz visibly frustrated.

Still, the Angels’ import never wavered. Setter Jules Tolentino kept trusting her, feeding Vander Weide even as PLDT made its last push and trimmed the gap to 21-24 on another Davison hit. On her next try, Vander Weide soared for a zero-tempo blast and finally broke through – pounding the ball just beyond Arado’s desperate reach.
