Multi-titled PBA coach and former national team mentor Yeng Guiao will be the special guest when the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas-Region 4A Rizal holds its general assembly at the Case Room of STI’s Head Office in Ortigas Extension, Cainta.
The event will be held on Sunday, April 12, from 3 to 6 p.m.
BJ Manalo, provincial director of SBP-Rizal, confirmed to Pinoystep.com this latest development after securing approval from STI management headed by its president Peter K. Fernandez, the use of its facilities in the gathering of different basketball stakeholders composed of board of directors, the group’s executive team, coaches, referees and supporters from across the Rizal province.
Guiao, who also lives in the Rizal area in Valley Golf, Cainta, will be the special guest.
Already an accomplished coach, winning seven championships in three different teams in the PBA, Guiao’s impact goes beyond the game of basketball. Just recently, he was feted with the Presidential Award by the Philippine Sportswriters Association by becoming a modern day hero in sports.
In between his work as a bench tactician of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Guiao also served as Representative of the First District of Pampanga and in 2016, he was the only member of the House of Representatives who fought for the PSC Law, a mandate that orders the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to remit 5% of its total annual gross to the government sports agency (PSC), for funding of its athletes’ training, exposure, events and incentives to the medalists in major competitions.
Since 1993 all the way to 2024, past Presidents of the country, were able to use some of the funds supposed to be given to the PSC and redirect these funds to the Office of the President’s intelligence fund.
But last year, Guiao received the biggest victory which he shared to Philippine sports when the Supreme Court ordered PCSO and PAGCOR to remit a sum of P38 billion to the PSC, payable in 10 years. The veteran bench tactician, who also worked as commissioner of the now defunct Philippine Basketball League from 1997 to 2000, considered this milestone as somehow one of his biggest legacies.
The SBP Rizal’s decision to tap Guiao as special guest proved to be timely as this will likewise serve as some sort of a hero’s welcome to the man.
Guiao will attend the SBP Rizal general assembly as the officials will also present the group’s organizational structure and governance framework while also getting to know up close and personal the officials, including the program directors, who will work hand in hand in aligning the group’s strategic priorities for grassroots basketball development in the entire province.
SBP Rizal will also launch its flagship programs — the PE Teacher Quarterly Training and After-School Basketball Hubs — while also aiming to strengthen its partnerships with local government units, schools and corporate sponsors.
