Make way for a more exciting, more fascinating and more data-filled coverages of FIBA-related events this year.
This was promised by the International Basketball Federation to the heads and representatives of the world’s cage bodies who attended the recent FIBA Mid-Term Congress in Manama, Bahrain.
Erika Dy, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ executive director told Pinoystep.com how they got overwhelmed by the plans of the world’s basketball governing body for their upcoming events, among them include the FIBA Academy Program and the new AI-driven technologies from Genius Sports as well as new innovations that will be used for broadcasts.
“I don’t know where to start, but basketball is moving towards the right direction I think,” wrote Dy in a Viber message. “I think the FIBA Academy Program is very good.”
FIBA’s way of education doesn’t only goes inside the basketball court as just recently, it launched an Online Academy for FIBA Managers.
This unique education initiative is now available to FIBA’s 213 member National Federations, and the wider basketball community. The program sets out the fundamental principles of the FIBA National Federations Manual into an online interactive learning program; with the aim of bringing best practice management, leadership and administrative techniques to the forefront of the sport.
All successful students in the program receive a certificate from FIBA Academy and thereby become an accredited FIBA Manager.
“We do plan to send one, pero wala pa because end of the year pa siya,” Dy added.
Dy also shared some of the plans that will be implemented by Genius Sports beginning this year with its AI-powered automated player tracking system. This advanced technology will also provide users access to a suite of cutting-edge coaching tools and analytics, automated officiating, and broadcast augmentation tools.
From those innovations by Genius Sports, Dy is more fascinated on the things that will be used during the broadcast of the games.
“There are a lot of things they are into. For broadcast purposes, they’ll be using AR (Augmented Reality), using optical mapping. That will make the broadcast much more exciting and better,” she added.
AR integrations such as real-time data overlays make sports more accessible and culturally relevant to new and emerging fans. Athletes can also use AR to enhance their performance through virtual simulations and performance analysis.
This new technology will transform the entire data and video ecosystem of international basketball, providing a unified, connected solution to automate and synchronize the collection of live game statistics and video production with advanced player tracking. Genius Sports’ optical system has been trained to read and understand live game plays and predict outcomes in real-time, turning raw live data and video into valuable, actionable game insights.
