Smiles were abound as STI West Negros University took pride in hosting the FIBA Under 18 Women’s Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers. The folks here have every reason to do as they watched our Philippine women’s basketball squad in scoring a huge 93-42 victory over Vietnam in Day 1 of the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Five players, including top playmaker Sophia Dignadice, finished in double figures for our Philippine women’s youth team. The second generation player and daughter of PBA grand slam champion and many-time national team member Yves Dignadice, played a brilliant, all-around performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The younger Dignadice submitted impressive numbers of 10 points, six rebounds, five assists, and six steals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tiffany Reyes was named Best Player of the Game after finishing with 14 points and five rebounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Presiding on offense for the Filipinas was UAAP Season 88 Girls’ Most Valuable Player Rhiane Perez led the way with 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals. Zaydhen Rosano chipped in 15 markers while Lea Pinuela, who waxed hot from three-point range late in the game, added 13 for debuting Philippine women’s youth coach Sandy Arespacochaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bacon Austria, the head of the basketball women’s program, added that although Reyes and Dignadice joined the team at the last minute, it didn’t affect the team’s scheme of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The late arrival of Sophia and Tiff was not a huge issue for us. They joined the team seamlessly because they are very coachable. Coach Sandy also held online meetings with them before they arrived so he could explain the system and familiarize them with what the team was doing. More importantly, they’ve been here before. It’s not their first time playing for the national team, so they didn’t have to adjust too much,” added Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the first time in more than two decades that STI West Negros University has hosted a major international sporting event. In 2005, when the Philippines hosted the SEA Games, STI West Negros University was used as a satellite venue of indoor volleyball games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The academic institution also staged other local sporting events such as the National and Regional PRISAA games and DepEd provincial meets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The local government unit of Bacolod City headed by Mayor Greg Gasataya was proud of bringing this prestigious event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We are proud to make history for our country alongside the SBP as Bacolod hosts this truly remarkable and iconic FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers. Bringing these qualifiers here in a historic first for the City of Smiles is a great leap forward as we continue our thrust to promote sports tourism in Bacolod. This event proves that our city is not just a home and training ground for world-class athletes, but also a premier destination ready to welcome international sporting events,” said Mayor Gasataya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Bacolod’s hosting has been superb. It’s been well planned, and you really feel the hospitality of the people from the moment you step off the plane until you reach the hotel and the game and practice venues.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joining the Philippines in the winner’s circle on opening day was Indonesia, which came out with a 66-49 triumph over Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
