BAHRAIN <\/span>\u2013 A consistent medal mine in international competitions, the Philippine boxing team hopes to live up to its billing as the sport makes its fitting debut in the Asian Youth Games here.<\/span><\/p>\n Bannered by rising star Leo <\/span>Mhar<\/span> Lobrido<\/span>, the Filipino pugs set out for their inaugural campaign starting Thursday at Hall 9 of the Exhibition World Bahrain.<\/span><\/p>\n The drawing of lots is set for Wednesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n Nonetheless, Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines Executive Director Marcus <\/span>Jarwin<\/span> Manalo said the six-man Filipino team is ready should any of them be drawn on opening day.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThey all should do well,\u201d said Manalo shortly after the boxing delegation arrived for the third edition of the quadrennial showcase late Tuesday night, following a 10-hour journey from Manila.<\/span><\/p>\n Aside from <\/span>Lobrido<\/span> (boys\u2019 46 kg), the team includes Jefferson Amaya (50 kg), John Michael <\/span>Estorba<\/span> (54 kg), and Justin James <\/span>Zampatti<\/span> (75 kg). The two entries in the distaff side are <\/span>Shairylle<\/span> Pores (46 kg) and <\/span>Ermalie<\/span> Caballero (50 kg).<\/span><\/p>\n Serving as coaches are Don <\/span>Abnett<\/span>, Gerson <\/span>Nietes<\/span>, former world champion Josie <\/span>Gabuco<\/span>, and former Asian Games gold medalist <\/span>Violito<\/span> Payla<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n Lobrido<\/span> is considered the best bet among the Filipino pugs, having ruled the Fourth Greater Area Bay Youth Boxing Challenge in Shenzhen, China last year.<\/span><\/p>\n He turned 16 just this month and hails from boxing hotbed Bago City, Negros Occidental.<\/span><\/p>\n Lobrido<\/span> also stands as one of the country\u2019s flag bearers during the Youth Games\u2019 formal opening ceremony, alongside <\/span>volleybelle<\/span> Harlyn<\/span> Serneche<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n Manalo, however, is not discounting the chances of the two lady boxers to contend for a medal finish.<\/span><\/p>\n Boxing is making its debut in the Youth Games, having not been part of the 2009 (Singapore) and 2013 (Nanjing) editions.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" BAHRAIN \u2013 A consistent medal mine in international competitions, the Philippine boxing team hopes to live up to its billing as the sport makes its fitting debut in the Asian Youth Games here.
