{"id":1105,"date":"2024-04-20T04:08:43","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T04:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/?p=1105"},"modified":"2024-04-20T04:10:12","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T04:10:12","slug":"gilas-cagebelles-eye-olympic-berth-long-term-naturalized-player","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/20\/gilas-cagebelles-eye-olympic-berth-long-term-naturalized-player\/","title":{"rendered":"Gilas cagebelles eye Olympic berth, long-term naturalized player"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An elusive Olympic berth and a naturalized player who will serve the Philippine squad for a long stretch will be the lofty goals of Gilas Pilipinas women\u2019s team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erika Dy, executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, shared the group\u2019s ambitious vision on the heels of the hoop governing body\u2019s Women\u2019s Summit attended by various stakeholders recently at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we discussed goals and I brought up the Olympics, Coach Patrick Aquino didn\u2019t look at me like I was crazy,\u201d wrote Dy in a Viber message. \u201cHe knew that I was serious and even better, he believed it was possible, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like the fact that he is up for the challenge of making the Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the tutelage of Aquino, the Gilas cagebelles are currently at 40<sup>th<\/sup> spot, the best Southeast Asian country in the current world rankings released by the International Basketball Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aquino, who also serves as the program director for the women\u2019s squad, was impressed in the team\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cagebelles finished sixth in the FIBA Women\u2019s Asia Cup last year, the highest-placed finish by the Filipinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilas women also secured the silver medal in last year\u2019s Southeast Asian Games. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impressive progress,\u201d wrote Aquino via Messenger. \u201cClimbing in the ranking reflects the team\u2019s dedication and improvement. It\u2019s a testament to their hard work and talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dy, who succeeded long-time executive director and former PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios late last year, started discussions about working together to develop&nbsp; an elite women&#8217;s basketball league that would benefit the top female basketball players&nbsp; in the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no problem with regards to the competitiveness of college basketball in the&nbsp; country for women, the problem is after college, where do these players go? Where can&nbsp; they play if they don&#8217;t make it to the national team? Kung wala tayong league, we won&#8217;t&nbsp; see the late-bloomers, sayang din talaga,&#8221; said Dy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just recently, the PBA had included women\u2019s basketball in the 3&#215;3 circuit to give them a platform of showcasing their talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/afril-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/afril-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/afril-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/afril-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/afril-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/pinoystep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/afril.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The defunct Philippine Basketball League, then being headed by Yeng Guiao as commissioner, created a first-of-its-kind tournament for women in 1998 and it was revived in 2008 before the amateur loop folded up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the Women\u2019s National Basketball League was created, but there was no competition held last year and chances of staging another event remains a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dy also answered the prospects of tapping a naturalized player who will reinforce the Gilas women quintet in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes, (we\u2019ve discussed it),\u201d added Dy. \u201cBut it will likely be a foreigner who is already here in the country. Think of Ange Kouame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also attending the Women\u2019s Summit were players from the national team such as Afril&nbsp; Bernardo, Camille Nolasco, Andrea Tongco and Louna Ozar were also present.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With what&#8217;s happening in the world of women&#8217;s basketball right now, with the US NCAA,&nbsp; let&#8217;s try to follow what is happening there. It also affected us here with the tryouts that&nbsp; we held.
