GRUPONG Bedista-San Beda got the better of San Beda Alabang Spartans, 58-54, in the Philippine Youth Basketball Championship (PYBC) Season 2 presented by Growee Under-18 division on Saturday at the Central Recreation and Fitness Center.
Leading San Beda was Growee Best Player of the Game Dwayne Nonato, who put up 19 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the PYBC, which is backed by Ceelin Plus, HydroAid, Celeteque DermoScience, Myra, pH Care, Enervon, and Alaxan FR.
“It was exciting kasi nga brothers kami, pero nakipag-compete lang kami nang maayos,” said Nonato, as Grupong Bedista improved to its second straight win in the PYBC, which is also supported by Oak Group of Companies, Team Access-Official Nike Partner, Goodday Friz, Aces Solar, Smart Sports, and The Printerie.
On the other hand, Jake Montales had 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the Spartans, but those were not enough as they fell short of completing a 17-point comeback.
In the other U18 match, Mapua University spoiled the debut of D’Generals x Pro Dimes, 64-53, for its second straight win.
Jade Alanza and Tobby Orbista led the Red Robins with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Joshua Kawamoto scored a game-high 18 points for D’Generals, which trailed by as many as 15.
In the Under-14 division, Grupong Bedista-San Beda also triumphed over San Beda Alabang Spartans, 79-58, for its first victory. Xian Latay led San Beda with 14 points and three rebounds, while Aiden Kitong added 13 points and five boards in the victory, where they led by as many as 22.
For the Spartans, Rein Malubag’s 26 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and three assists went to waste as they faltered in their debut.
Also in U14, Scrillah Kings posted its second straight win after dominating Lukkas x JTAGS, 91-62, as Zian Santos posted 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Jacob Dupet added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
JTAGS saw Kyrie Allen Race score a game-high 19 points, while Zane Enriquez and Johan Castro each had 11, but those were not enough as they trailed by as many as 29 after holding a 14-point lead earlier in the match.
Over in the Under-16 division, San Beda Alabang Spartans earned their second straight win after beating Golden Caha-Mafia, 87-60, with Akhiro Reynon posting 23 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and two assists.
Earl Murphy led Golden Caha with 18 points, while Hailey Nido and Shaun Vargas scored 16 and 13, respectively, in the loss, where they trailed by as many as 29.
Still in U16, Aces Solar x D’Generals dumped Drel’s Lechon x MJB, 99-56, thanks in large part to Zion Aguilar’s 14 points, two rebounds, and two assists, and Hugo Delos Santos’ 13 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and one steal.
This was Aces Solar’s first win, while Drel’s Lechon absorbed its first loss in two games despite Jomari Luna’s game-high 19 points and two rebounds.
Completing the U16 matches, Grupong Bedista-San Beda finally entered the win column after dropping its first match, beating Hooplab-MCBA, 89-57.
Stephen Uy led the way with 16 points, two assists, and one rebound. Cris Basaya added 14, while John Galicia had 13 points and four boards.
